This homemade yogurt dill sauce requires only 5 simple ingredients and is ready to serve in minutes.

I was looking for a bowl of refreshing salad to rejuvenate my body in the hot and humid weather that day, but found out my house has run out of salad dressing. And the lazy me couldn’t be bothered to get changed, walk down the streets, and sweat myself for a bottle of salad dressing, so I decided to make one with the ingredients I had in the kitchen, and made this easy yogurt dill sauce!

When creamy yogurt meets zesty dill in a harmonious blend of flavours, this versatile sauce is a perfect companion to grilled meats, fresh salads, or as a delectable dip for your favourite veggies. You don’t even need much seasonings for this sauce/dip as the combination of natural fresh flavours already makes it so good on its own! Give this a try and I’m sure you’ll be serving it with other dishes on the table for a burst of flavour.

What makes this yogurt dill sauce so good

  • Quick and easy: Taking just minutes to make, this yogurt dill sauce recipe is super easy to make at home, and you can adjust the amounts of each ingredient to make a sauce, dip, or salad dressing that suits your taste best!
  • Versatile: The combination of its creamy texture, tangy flavour from the yogurt, and refreshing taste from the dill herb creates a well-balanced and versatile sauce that can complement various dishes, from grilled meats, deep-fried foods, to fresh vegetables or salads.
  • A healthy sauce option: Offering good sources of probiotics, antioxidants, and vitamins, this yogurt dill sauce is a healthy option for a weight-loss diet.

Ingredients for yogurt dill sauce

  • Greek yogurt: This gives a creamy and thick texture to the sauce with a tangy, dense consistency.
  • Fresh dill: Dill has a fresh, slightly tangy taste with hints of anise and lemon, which adds a bright and refreshing element to the sauce. It enhances the overall taste and aroma of the sauce, adding depth and complexity to it.
  • Milk: I used some milk to add a milky taste with hints of sweetness to neutralise the tangy flavour and balance out the thick texture from the Greek yogurt, obtaining the smooth consistency that I want!
  • Lemon juice: This adds a citrusy, bright, and tangy flavour to the sauce, enhancing the overall taste, and balancing out the flavours of other ingredients to create a harmonious flavour profile. The natural acidity of lemon juice also acts as a preservative, helping to prevent the sauce from spoiling quickly.
  • Seasoning: I added a pinch of salt and pepper to bring out the natural flavours of the ingredients, and add a subtle heat and depth to the sauce. This helps to balance the tanginess of the yogurt and the freshness of the dill, creating a well-rounded and flavorful sauce that can elevate the taste of various dishes.

How to make yogurt dill sauce

  1. Gather all ingredients in a large bowl and mix to combine.
  2. Do a taste test and adjust the proportions of the ingredients to create a sauce with your own desired taste and texture.

What does the sauce taste like?

This homemade yogurt dill sauce has a tangy and creamy flavour with a refreshing hint of dill. The yogurt provides a slightly sour taste, while the dill adds a fresh and herbaceous note. The combination of these ingredients creates a versatile sauce that can complement a variety of dishes, from grilled meats to salads. Its well-balanced, light, and flavourful profile adds a refreshing note, enhancing the overall taste of the dish it accompanies. It literally just makes your meal more appetising and delicious!

Health benefits of yogurt dill sauce

  • A good source of probiotics: The probiotics found in Greek yogurt promote gut health by maintaining a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria in the digestive system.
  • Rich in antioxidants and vitamins: The dill herb and lemon juice contain antibacterial properties and vitamins, such as vitamin A and vitamin C, which can help boost the immune system and reduce inflammation.
  • A high-protein, low-calorie option: The protein content in Greek yogurt facilitates muscle growth, supports weight management, and promotes feelings of fullness. This yogurt dill sauce is also a lower-calorie alternative to mayonnaise-based sauces, making it a healthier option that contributes to a well-rounded and nutritious diet.

Can I use regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt?

Yes, you can. Do note that regular yogurt is typically milder and more liquid in texture, so you’ll create a sauce with a thinner consistency. You might want to exclude the milk to prevent the sauce from being too liquidy. I chose Greek yogurt not only because of its rich tangy flavour and the thick creamy texture, but also because it is lower in carbohydrates and higher in protein than regular yogurt. So Greek yogurt may be a better option for those looking to increase their protein intake or reduce their carbohydrate consumption!

Can I use plant-based milk instead?

Yes, absolutely. You can use plant-based milk, such as almond milk, coconut milk, or soy milk, to make the sauce as a dairy-free alternative. However, it’s important to note that the consistency and flavour of the sauce may vary slightly as plant-based milk may not have the same tanginess or thickness as dairy yogurt, so you may need to adjust the ingredients or proportions to achieve the desired texture and taste.

What to pair with

How long does this homemade yogurt dill sauce last?

It can last for about 1 to 2 weeks when stored properly in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It is important to ensure that the sauce is kept refrigerated at all times to prevent bacterial growth and maintain its freshness! If you notice any changes in colour, texture, or smell, it is best to discard the sauce.

Combining creamy yogurt, milk, citrusy lemon juice, and fragrant dill, experience the freshness and vibrancy of this homemade yogurt dill sauce that brings a burst of flavour to every dish it touches.
