Sharing with you all my mum’s traditional french toast recipe! It is soft and moist inside with a sweet, crispy crust, making it incredibly irresistible. Ready to serve in a few minutes, this french toast recipe is easy and quick to make.

Using some leftover white bread from a few days ago, this homemade french toast is moist and fluffy on the inside and perfectly golden-brown on the outside. Instead of whisking eggs with milk, my mum always uses condensed milk to add extra sweetness and creaminess to the flavour!

Drizzle with maple syrup and combine with mixed berries, their refreshing flavours neutralise the sweetness of the french toast, making it even more addictive. Simply soak thick slices of bread in the egg and condensed milk mixture, then pan-fry till golden brown, you’ll be able to enjoy a scrumptious breakfast in no time!

Ingredients for french toast

  • Eggs: This recipe uses 2 eggs for the mixture.
  • Condensed milk: Using condensed milk instead of milk in the mixture, this adds creaminess and sweetness to the flavour.
  • Butter: Pan-fry the french toast with butter to enrich its taste.
  • Flavouring and garnishing: Customise your own french toast with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and mixed berries. The french toast itself is delicious on its own, but adding these flavourings will further enhance your experience!

How to make french toast

  1. Whisk together eggs and condensed milk until well combined.
  2. Soak the bread slices in the mixture.
  3. Pan-fry the bread slices until golden brown.
  4. Customise the french toasts with your own choices of ingredients. In this recipe, I garnished with powdered sugar, cinnamon powder, drizzled some maple syrup on top and decorated with mixed berries.

Success tips for making fluffy french toast

Use medium to low heat.

If you pan-fry the toasts with butter over high heat, you’ll risk burning the toasts as the butter will caramelise and turn brown quickly, resulting in a french toast that is burnt outside but still soggy inside. Pan-fry the toasts for about 2-3 minutes per side over medium to low heat to achieve a crispy crust and a fluffy and moist interior.

Whisk the mixture until well combined.

Ensure the condensed milk and eggs are incorporated fully before soaking the bread slices, so that you won’t end up having french toasts that have different flavours and colours in different parts of the toast.

Ensure all surface areas of the bread are soaked in the mixture.

To achieve a perfectly golden brown crust and a fluffy interior in all areas of the french toasts, be sure to soak the bread slices fully in the mixture.

  • Add nuts: You can top the french toasts with chopped almonds, walnuts, or pecans to add crunchiness to the dish.
  • Switch to other syrups: Instead of drizzling with maple syrup, chocolate syrup or strawberry syrup also pairs perfectly well with this french toast recipe!
  • Enjoy the french toast on its own: Since the mixture already includes the sweet condensed milk, these french toasts taste deliciously milky and sweet on their own without the need of additional flavourings and toppings!

This easy french toast recipe is one of my favourites from my mum’s kitchen. It is easy to make and will be ready in minutes. Serve it as breakfast or an afternoon tea snack to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings!
