For breakfast, I always love to add in some fruits to freshen up myself and prepare for a busy, fulfilling day. So in this recipe, I’ll be sharing the base ingredients to make overnight oats, and 4 different fruit flavour ideas that just elevate the experience to the next level. There are endless possibilities for flavour combinations, which is what makes overnight oats such a great versatile recipe!

Base ingredients for overnight oats

  • Rolled oats: The main ingredient for this recipe. The recipe is for 4 servings.
  • Milk: This hydrates and adds a creamy texture to the oats!
  • Yogurt (optional): This is not necessary but adding yogurt adds a tangy flavour and enriches the texture, making it super enjoyable to eat. I like to use Greek yogurt for a creamier and thicker texture, and a greater boost of protein.
  • Sweetener (optional): You can use honey or maple syrup to sweeten the oats. You can also add in vanilla extract to enhance the flavours.
  • Chia seeds (optional): These give an extra nutritional punch to the oats, giving them a pudding-like texture. They also add crunchiness to every bite, making it incredibly irresistible!
  • Toppings (optional): Have fun making overnight oats with different topping combinations. You can top with fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts, nut butter, granola, seeds and spices (e.g., cinnamon, nutmeg).

How to make basic overnight oats – the ratio

The ratios between the base ingredients for overnight oats determine the consistency. Be sure to experiment and adjust the ratios to achieve a desired consistency that you like the most. Once you’ve found your personally preferred ratios, you can then customise it with variations of toppings and flavour combinations.

The basic ratio of oats and liquid I used is:

I used full fat milk, but skim milk, plant-based milk, or water would work as well. Do note that these alternatives will give a thinner consistency of the overnight oats.

I much prefer adding in yogurt for a richer, creamier, and thicker texture. And here’s the ratio I used with yogurt:

I used Greek-style yogurt which is slightly thinner than normal Greek yogurt, but thicker than regular yogurt. Experiment with different types of yogurt to find your desired consistency!

Steps to make overnight oats base

  1. In a jar or a bowl, add in oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, and maple syrup.
  2. Mix well, cover with a lid, and refrigerate overnight.

That’s it. And your breakfast will be ready to eat the next morning!

Health benefits of overnight oats

  1. High in fibre: Oats are rich in soluble fibre, which helps lower cholesterol levels, stabilise blood sugar, and improve gut health.
  2. Sustained energy: It keeps you full and focused throughout the morning!
  3. Protein boost: Add in ingredients like Greek yogurt, protein powder, or nut butter to increase the protein content.
  4. Customisable nutrition: What I love about overnight oats is that you can easily tailor them to make them even healthier, by adding fruits, seeds, nuts, or superfoods.
  5. Weight management: Overnight oats have a high fibre and protein content that help you feel full longer. It honestly did reduce my snacking!

4 Fruit flavour ideas for overnight oats

I literally prepare a few servings of overnight oats in one go when I’m too lazy to think of what to cook for breakfast. It’s such a delicious and convenient way to enjoy a nutritious breakfast with your favourite flavour add-ons! Below are four delightful fruit flavour combinations to inspire your morning routine.

Matcha strawberry

Start your day with a burst of vibrant flavours and a boost of energy with this matcha strawberry overnight oats. It offers a pleasing balance between the earthy tones from the matcha and refreshing flavours from strawberries.

This is my first time trying matcha strawberry flavour and it came out amazingly good! The rich, slightly bitter notes of matcha contrast beautifully with the bright, fruity sweetness of fresh strawberries. Combining with creamy oats, this flavour combination gives you a calming, energising kick in the morning. I even topped it with extra matcha powder and chopped strawberries for an ultimate refreshing, and satisfying breakfast.

Tips for making frothy matcha mixture

  • Soak the bamboo whisk (chasen) in warm water before whisking: Warm water softens the delicate bamboo bristle, which makes them more flexible and helps the matcha blend more easily with water. This creates a smoother, frothier matcha with a creamier texture.
  • Whisk in a “W” motion: The back-and-forth movement of the W shape ensures that all the matcha gets well mixed with the water, and helps introduce air into the mixture. Using this technique results in a frothy layer with a smooth and creamy texture.

Mixed berry

Mixed berry overnight oats is by far my favourite flavour combination. It’s like a berry patch in a jar, ready to brighten your morning! Simply make a mixed berry compote and mix it with the oats base, then top with extra fresh mixed berries and granola the next morning.

This colourful breakfast is refreshing, and fruity with sweet, citrusy notes, with additional crunch from the granola on top. With a medley of blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries folded into the oats, each bite is filled with juicy sweetness. You can even add an extra scoop of nut butter for a P&J experience! I personally lovee almond butter.

Tips for making mixed berry compote

  • Dice the strawberries before heating: You can mash the mixed berries while simmering the sauce when making the compote, but I found it quite fussy for strawberries. So by dicing the strawberries in advance makes it much easier and quicker to soften the berries and blend their flavours together.
  • Adjust the sweetness: I added some maple syrup when cooking the compote, but start with no sweetener and taste as you go. Ripe berries can already be sweet enough on their own.
  • Add in acidity: You can squeeze in some lemon juice for a citrus twist to brighten the flavours.
  • Cool down: Let the compote cool completely before mixing with the oats base. The flavours will deepen and the compote will thicken even more as it sits, making it even better!

Apple cinnamon

Apple cinnamon overnight oats is a delicious, wholesome breakfast that combines the comforting flavours of spiced apples and creamy oats. The warm, woody notes of cinnamon infuse into the oats overnight, with apples adding a slight acidity and natural sweetness, making it a nourishing meal that feels indulgent yet healthy. Topped with diced apples, the added crisp and crunchy texture contrasts perfectly well with the creamy oats.

For an extra crunch and chew, you can even sprinkle some chopped nuts and dried fruit on top. Enjoy it cold for a refreshing morning, or warm it up for a cosy breakfast anytime of the year!

Peach mango

This flavour combination offers you a vibrant, tropical delight. The floral, honeyed notes from the peach blend well with the sweetness and subtle tanginess from the mango, creating a delicious harmony between both juicy fruit.

Instead of mixing diced peaches and mangoes with the oats, I layered them in between the oats mixture to let their sweet, succulent tastes slowly infuse into the oats while keeping their most natural flavours. As you bite into the peach mango overnight oats, the soft, smooth, and melt-in-your-mouth texture enlightens your morning.

Success tips for making overnight oats

Use a jug that has a bigger volume than the amount of ingredients: You’ll need to have enough space in the jar for you to mix the ingredients more easily.

Use old-fashioned rolled oats: This gives you the best texture. Quick-cooking oats will get mushy.

Mix well: Make sure the oats are fully submerged in liquid to prevent dryness.

Add flavours: There are endless possibilities for flavour combinations, and this blog will share 4 different flavour and topping combinations using fresh fruit – matcha strawberry, apple cinnamon, peach mango, and mixed berry.

Add toppings after: Toppings like fruit, nuts, and seeds are best added right before serving. Otherwise, they’ll become soggy.

How long can I store overnight oats?

You can store overnight oats in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, making them perfect for meal prep. Just keep them in an airtight container!

Can I use instant oats?

Yes you can, but rolled oats are preferred for the best texture. Instant oats may become too mushy when soaked overnight.

What liquid should I use?

You can use various liquids such as milk (dairy or plant-based), yogurt, or even fruit juice. The choice depends on your dietary preferences and flavour preferences!

Do I need to cook the oats?

Nope! The beauty of overnight oats is that they don’t require cooking. The soaking process softens the oats, making them ready to eat by morning.

How to make them less thick?

You can thin the overnight oats by adding more liquid (e.g., milk or yogurt) in the morning to reach your desired consistency. Adding more milk will make them smoother, while yogurt will make them creamier, so it all depends on your likings and what works best for you!

Can I heat overnight oats?

Yes, absolutely! If you prefer warm oats, you can heat them in the microwave or on the stovetop before enjoying them.

Wake up to a creamy, satisfying meal with this easy overnight oats recipe. Packed with fibre, protein, and essential vitamins, it is a nutritious and convenient breakfast option with endless possible flavour combinations. You’ll just never get tired of them!
